High-Protein Diet and Kidney Health: Fact vs. Myth

The belief that a high-protein diet is detrimental to kidney health has been prevalent, particularly among those following low-carb diets. This notion stems from the idea that the kidneys must filter and excrete the byproducts of protein metabolism, potentially overburdening them. However, recent studies have shown that for individuals with normal kidney function, a high-protein diet does not adversely affect kidney function. Research published in journals such as The International Journal of Sports Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism, The Annals of Internal Medicine, and Nutrition & Metabolism supports this. One study indicated that a high-protein diet might accelerate renal decline in individuals with pre-existing kidney insufficiency, but this is not the case for those with healthy kidneys. Therefore, while a high-protein diet may not be suitable for everyone, it is not inherently harmful to those with normal kidney function.
